First Days in Cincinnati

Dear fellows,

I am sitting in the computer class at the the University of Cincinnati (UC) now. We got a work to do, which I really like, because you benefit from this. Our task is to write one article about a given topic in form of a blog every workday. Our college, where I am writing this lines, is situated in Blue Ash, the partner city of Ilmenau.

Let me talk about the place, where our accomodation is located. Cincinnati is one of the biggest cities of the US federal state Ohio. The landscape all around is mainly flat. It is really close situated to Kentucky, just divieded by the the river Ohio river. On our way from the airport to Cincinnati city we had a bright sight at the skyscrapers. Everything is huge and you can find stadiums for American football and Baseball. Sports have a high priority in this country. This high levels make a big impression, but on the other hand it can be seen as arrogance in creating just high dimensions. Nevertheless it is part of the American way of life, but all has started to change since the financial crisis- more and more smaller cars are seen on the streets.

Our dormitory is a skyscraper too and is located at the edge of UC-campus. From our room we have a look at th University stadium (at least 15000 seats), tennis court, athletics stadium and a football stadium. All the university sites are modern and have included shops like starbucks and subway. On the other side of the street you can find a German Hungarian bar called "Christies". We really like to go there for a drink.

It is hot summer here in Cincinnati and it is a huge change when you go inside this buildings and you freeze because of the air conditioning. Here are about 30 degrees. Except the temperatures everything I have heard from others has become reality, e.g. eating, traffic, sports and so on. American really like to do sports, but isn't it caused sometimes by bad feeding? Everywhere you can just eat sandwiches.

  1. Hi - I really like your comments on American lifestyle - especially about the importance of sports. For me, when I arrived from Canada I noticed this right away, especially sports at the university level which are very popular. You're right about fast food, young people especially consume lots of it. I hope you will be able to turn down the air conditioning in your dorm room so it isn't so cold. One correction of fact: Cincinnati is not the capital of Ohio, Columbus is (90 minutes north of Cincinnati)

    See you tomorrow.
    Jody
